Another step forward for Derby's new pool

Thu 29 Jun 2017

Survey work is underway this week at Moorways in preparation for the proposed new swimming pool complex.

Leading engineering consultants Curtins have been appointed to carry out geo-environmental investigations on the site to help develop detailed designs for the new swimming pool complex. As part of the work a ground team will be drilling down to 15 metres to assess the ground conditions.

The ground investigation will provide detailed information to identify the general geological, geotechnical and groundwater properties of the site. Shallow 5m samples will also be taken and in total 28 environmental samples will be collected across the site.

Councillor Baggy Shanker, lead cabinet member for the project, said:

“This is another step forward to deliver a new swimming pool complex for Derby. The work on site will feed directly into the detailed design work that we are currently undertaking.

“We are on track to deliver the proposed new swimming pool complex that will open to the public in 2020. This ambitious facility will provide a strong future for swimming in Derby, ensuring communities have the space for swimming, learning and training.”

The proposed new swimming pool complex at Moorways will provide communities with a centre that offers water space for learners, clubs, events, casual swimmers and leisure.

A new swimming pool complex will be a valuable investment for Derby because poor health and wellbeing costs everyone. It will also create wider opportunities for success, by making Derby attractive for business recruitment and by helping our athletes to succeed and inspire.

Detailed designs are currently been drawn up for a new swimming pool complex up to a total project cost of up to a maximum of £35 million. Progress is also being made to demolish the old derelict sports centre and swimming pool during this summer. It is expected that more detailed plans will be released in the coming months.

The Council's ambition is to open the new swimming pool complex in 2020.

Curtins Principal Geo-Environmental Engineer Rob Allen commented

“We are delighted to be involved in this exciting project, continuing our previous experience of working on similar schemes all around the UK, and of working with Derby Council.”
