Top 8 Holiday Activities for the Family to Enjoy this Summer

In Derby has plenty on offer for families during the Summer Holidays, running from Saturday 29 July to Sunday 3 September. With outdoor activities, performances and loads of events, there is something for everyone to enjoy!

Get the kids out of their Batcaves with the Derby Superhero Picnic in the Park events! There will be craft and nature activities, along with 'Try it' sessions, the Derby Homes activity van, face painting, superhero competitions and more. Events are taking place between the hours of 11am and 3pm entry is free at the following parks:

  • Mon 31 July at Markeaton Park
  • Tue 1 August at Darley Park
  • Wed 2 August at Derby Arboretum
  • Thu 3 August at Chaddesden Park
  • Fri 4 August at Sunnydale Park

The Mundy Play Centre has been recently refurbished with new exciting play equipment including a new pirate ship and an adventure hub in the free entry large play areas. There will also be paid activities including a bouncy castle, crazy golf, electric cars and canoes available every weekend, weather dependent. No pre-booking is necessary.

Make a splash at Queen’s Leisure Centre with twice-weekly pool parties, every Tuesday and Thursday from 1pm to 3pm. Family and friends are welcome to enjoy the party with music, floats and inflatables on hand so everyone can enjoy the fun! The sessions cost £4.10 per person.

Get going at Derby Arena, where families can give track cycling a go in the Family Track Cycling sessions. No experience is needed, as qualified coaches will provide advice and equipment to allow all participants to enjoy this fantastic sport! Sessions will be running every Monday during the summer holidays, from 9:30am – 10:30am, with prices starting at £20.

Golf enthusiasts will be pleased to learn that there are a number of options available across Derby Parks. Markeaton Park offers Crazy Golf, Pitch & Putt and Footgolf with prices starting from £1.70 for 2 hours of play. Give golf a go with Get into Golf – the perfect way to try out this great sport for just £5 per person, with equipment hire included, at Allestree Park Golf Course! Grab those dancing shoes and get down to the Disco Fever sessions at Springwood Leisure Centre. Under 12s can dance to the latest music, feel the beat and show everyone their moves on Friday 11 and Friday 25 August, from 3pm – 4pm. At just £3 per person, this is a great way to get active and have fun. Alternatively, head to Derby Arena for fantastic street dancing fun – 7 to 16 year olds can enjoy a modern twist on old school funk to favourite current songs on Friday 11 and Tuesday 22 August from 2pm to 3pm for £3.

Budding performers can learn tips and tricks at the Summer Musical Theatre School – a weeklong series of workshops aimed at improving musical theatre skills. Young people aged 8 to 16 can take part in workshops that will centre on singing, acting and dancing performance techniques, as well as general stage craft. The week is concluded with a live performance in the evening on Saturday 5 August! The Summer Musical Theatre School takes place at the Guildhall Theatre from Monday 31 July to Friday 4 August, and costs £140. How about taking a Wild Walk Adventure with the kids at Markeaton Park? Join the Babbling Vagabonds on a theatrical journey to discover the rascal who has been stealing the King’s apples. Families can pit their wits against riddlers, puzzle makers and a tricksy wolf, to see if they can discover The Golden Thief of Markeaton Park. This is an outdoor theatrical walk and will take about an hour to complete. Shows are running on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 July.
