Derby has lots to offer students who want to have an active social life, enjoy their free time and make friends locally, alongside their studies. Whether they’re interested in keeping fit, experiencing the local culture or simply trying something new, there is something affordable for all students to get involved in to make the most of their time living in Derby.

  1. Students can get some light relief from their studies by watching Ball by Brian Lobel at the Guildhall Theatre Clubrooms from Thursday 2 November - Saturday 4 November. A Lost Boys and Derby LIVE co-production which infuses the 'Cancer Story' with an urgency and humour which is sometimes salacious and always, above all else, honest and open. The play, featuring Paul Broesmith, weaves together a myriad of topics and themes, providing cancer with a much deserved kick in the ball(s).

  2. Derby Active has a fantastic offer to welcome students to Derby, with access to facilities at three leisure centres across the city at a discount price. Students can go swimming at one of three pools at Queen’s Leisure Centre. Students can also workout at one of three gyms or try out over 100 exercise classes with Derby Active at Queen’s Leisure Centre, Springwood Leisure Centre and Derby Arena who are all taking part in the offer, allowing students access to state-of-the-art gym equipment and facilities at all three sites. The offer costs just £22.50 per month on a direct debit deal, £75 for a 4 month membership, or £180 for an annual membership.   5. Derby Arena plays host to a range of events and live performances, including the annual Christmas pantomime. This year students can ‘be our guest’ for a spellbinding performance of Beauty and the Beast from Tuesday 5 December - Sunday 31 December.   6. Students can experience a fabulous festive treat with a spin on the Christmas Ice Rink, made of real ice in Derby’s Market Place from Friday 1 December - Tuesday 2 January. Tickets are priced from only £6.50 - £8.50 and concessions are available for full time students when booking.

  7. There will be a FREE Christmas Lights switch-on event and festive parade to attend on Saturday 18 November in the market place from 3.30pm.

  9. Students who enjoy live music can see ‘jaw-dropping guitar player’ Martyn Joseph perform at the Guildhall Theatre on Friday 19 January from 8pm. He’s been dubbed ‘The Welsh Springsteen’ due to his unique percussive style teamed with a powerful show-stopping voice.

  10. Award-winning comedian and writer Ed Byrne, a popular comedian with students, is set to perform at Derby Arena on Friday 20 April 2018 as part of his latest UK stand-up tour. In his latest tour entitled, Spoiler Alert, Ed takes the question of whether as a nation we are spoiled, turns it upside down and shakes it until the funny falls out. His live work has built up legions of fans and he remains the observational stand-up to see and is not to be missed.
