Preparations underway for Spondon Library to become Derby’s next Community Managed Library
Tue 29 May 2018
Spondon Library is set to become a Community Managed Library as Derby City Council hand the keys over to local charity Direct Help and Advice (DHA).
The library’s last day operating as a council-run library will be Tuesday 12 June. It will then close temporarily for work to take place ahead of re-opening as a Community Managed Library on Monday 25 June.
Councillor Alan Grimadell, Cabinet Member for Leisure Culture and Tourism, said: “Following the handover of Sinfin Library, Spondon will be the next library to change over. DHA, the local charity that will run it, will be working closely with the local community to tailor the services to suit the area. This is all about delivering a successful and sustainable library service for the future.”
The Council will carry out training for staff and volunteers during this time, to make sure library services run as smoothly as possible once re-opened.
Customers can access and reserve books at other libraries in Derby during the temporary closure and eBooks will continue to be available 24/7.
Spondon Library is one of ten libraries the Council will transition over to DHA as part of plans to deliver a successful and financially sustainable library service for Derby.
Other libraries being transferred to DHA as part of a phased process include: Allenton Library, Allestree Library, Bleagreaves Library, The Philip Whitehead Memorial Library at Chaddesden Park, Chellaston Library, Derwent Library, Mackworth Library and Springwood Library. Sinfin Library was the first to become a Community Managed Library at the beginning of May.
DHA’s aim is to provide the local community with services beyond borrowing books. They are working closely with communities at each local library to tailor services to fit each area.
Community Action Derby is working in partnership with DHA to recruit volunteers for all proposed Community Managed Libraries. For more information on how to get involved in volunteering please contact them on 01332 346266
