Orchard completed at Derby recreation ground

Mon 25 Mar 2024

Work to plant an orchard at a Derby recreation ground has been completed.

Friends of Sinfin Moor Park Local Nature Reserve working in partnership with Derby City Council’s Parks team, local councillors, the Locality Team and Move More undertook the planting at Sinfin Recreation Ground.

As part of plans to attract more users to the park, part of it was earmarked for the creation of an orchard. Six different varieties of fruit tree were planted last year, and more have recently been added.  This included a range of different varieties of apples, pears and plums.

After planting, the team working on the project persevered through rainy and muddy conditions to build frames to protect the young trees.

The benefits of the orchard will be seen as the trees develop. In time, they will be full of fruit and park users will be able to help themselves to a healthy snack.

This is the first phase of works to make Sinfin Recreation Ground more vibrant and attractive and create an environment that encourages individuals and families to spend their leisure time there.
