Derby Arena Celebrates Lewis Fletcher’s Inspiring Return to Cycling
Wed 22 Apr 2026
Derby Arena is proud to celebrate the inspiring journey of Lewis Fletcher, a 19-year-old University of Derby student who has made a remarkable return to cycling by taking to the velodrome track at Derby Arena following a life-threatening accident just 19 months ago.
After suffering a devastating BMX crash in September 2024 that left him in a coma and requiring intensive care, Lewis has shown extraordinary determination to rebuild his strength, confidence and passion for cycling. Now, he has swapped BMX racing for track cycling and is training on the Derby Arena velodrome as he sets his sights on reaching the highest levels of the sport.
Lewis’s return to the bike marks a significant milestone in his recovery, having overcome serious brain injuries, cognitive fatigue and challenges with speech. His recent performances, including a silver medal in the team sprint at the BUCS Championships and competing at the Track National Championships, highlight both his resilience and his potential within track cycling.
Councillor Ndukwe Onuoha, Derby City Council Cabinet Member for Streetpride, Public Safety and Leisure said:
Lewis’s journey is truly inspiring and demonstrates the incredible power of determination, resilience and the role that sport can play in recovery.
We are proud that Derby Arena has been able to support Lewis as he returns to cycling and pursues his ambitions. Our facilities are here for everyone in the community, from those taking their first steps into cycling to athletes striving for elite performance, and we look forward to seeing Lewis continue to progress.

Lewis Fletcher said:
Derby Arena is the perfect facility to train as was part of the reason why I chose Derby University. The race events at the Arena have been great to be apart of and I look forward to many more hours of training and racing at Derby.
