Boating and water sports
If you want to take to the water, our parks offer several opportunities.
You can fish on the lake at Markeaton Park, you'll need a valid rod licence. The Earl of Harrington Angling Club manage fishing on the lake as well as Alvaston Lake, Allestree Lake, Mill Pond and Moorway Lane Pond.
Rowing boats and pedalos are available to hire on the lake at Markeaton Park.
Model boat clubs
Alvaston Pirates Model Boat Club meet at the lake on Alvaston park. They are a fairly young group, welcoming all types of model boat enthusiasts. To find out more visit the Alvaston Pirates Model Boat Club website.
Derby Model Boat Club are a friendly and informal group of boat enthusiasts, meeting every Wednesday at the canoe pond in the Mundy Play Centre on Markeaton Park. For more details please visit the Derby Model Boat Club website or follow the Facebook page for updates.
The River Derwent is a good canoeing venue offering flat water within Darley Park. Darley Barn offers a range of opportunities - choose from taster sessions, which give you an introduction to canoeing, to courses where you can develop a real interest in paddling.
