Team GB achieved an astounding gold in yesterday’s men’s team pursuit at the 2018 UCI Track Cycling World Championships. Derby Arena based Team KGF rider Charlie Tanfield rode as part of the winning team, who have gained Britain’s first men’s team pursuit world title since 2012.

Charlie Tanfield made his world championship debut in this winning race, alongside teammates Ed Clancy, Kian Emadi and Ethan Hayter, to defeat Denmark by nearly two seconds in 3:53.389.

Tanfield’s teammate and six time world champion Ed Clancy, said of the debut, “Ethan and Charlie have been two massive additions to the team here, they are really exciting prospects for the future.”

This world championship win follows on from huge success for Charlie Tanfield at the Tissot UCI Track Cycling World Cup in January, where he won the men’s individual pursuit, finishing five seconds ahead of opponent Ivo Oliveira, in 4:12.253. Charlie Tanfield was also part of the winning Team KGF in the team pursuit, defeating Russian team Lokosphinx.

KGF riders Dan Bigham and Charlie Tanfield will be back in action today competing for the individual pursuit world title.

Tanfield, as part of Team KGF, has been training at Derby Arena since 2015 with support from Derby Arena Head Track Cycle Coach Phil Kilpatrick. Team KGF also achieved tremendous success in the 2017 HSBC UK British National Track Cycling Championships where they beat the British Cycling performance squad, won three golds and a silver, alongside breaking the competition record for the 4km Team Pursuit with 4.04.644.
