Discover Autumn in Derby Parks
Thu 15 Oct 2026
As the seasons begin to change, Derby’s parks and green spaces are putting on one of their most spectacular displays of the year. From vibrant autumn colours to fascinating wildlife and seasonal fungi, there is plenty to discover on autumnal walks in Derby.
Whether you’re taking a brisk walk through woodland, exploring open parkland or simply enjoying the fresh air, remember to wrap up warm, watch out for wet or slippery ground, and plan ahead as the evenings draw in earlier.
Nature's Autumn Colour Show
One of the most recognisable signs of autumn is the transformation of tree leaves as shades of green give way to brilliant yellows, oranges and reds. This happens as chlorophyll levels in leaves reduce, revealing the vibrant pigments hidden beneath throughout the summer months.
Derby’s parks offer plenty of opportunities to enjoy this seasonal spectacle. Mature oak trees at Allestree Park can support up to 700,000 leaves at any one time, creating a stunning display as the colours begin to change. Visitors can also admire the striking autumn tones of acers, including the beautiful Japanese maple located outside the Walled Garden at Markeaton Park.

Winter Visitors Arrive
Autumn is also one of the most exciting times of year for birdwatchers. Hundreds of thousands of migrating birds arrive in the UK from across Europe as temperatures begin to fall.
Keep an eye out for redwings arriving from Scandinavia, pink-footed geese travelling from Iceland and the colourful waxwing, which occasionally appears in large numbers after journeys from northern Europe. Alongside these seasonal visitors, thousands of mallards arrive from countries including France, Finland and the Netherlands, taking advantage of the UK's milder winter climate and plentiful food supplies.
Many of these birds will spend the colder months in Britain before returning to their breeding grounds in spring.
A Fascinating Fungi Season
Autumn is also peak season for spotting fungi and mushrooms. Cooler temperatures combined with increased rainfall create ideal conditions for fungi to flourish, sending their fruiting bodies above ground.
A walk through Derby’s woodlands and nature sites could reveal a surprising variety of species. Look out for the iconic red-and-white fly agaric, often associated with fairy tales, alongside colourful waxcaps and the striking amethyst deceiver. Each species plays an important role in supporting healthy ecosystems by helping to break down organic matter and recycle nutrients back into the soil.
