Argentinian cyclist Mateo Marasas is currently training at Derby Arena as part of his journey towards the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. One of South America’s most promising track cycling talents, Mateo has travelled more than 7,000 miles from his hometown of Buenos Aires to train at the venue while competing across Europe.

Mateo is a former junior national BMX champion in Argentina. After moving to the USA for college, he switched disciplines to track cycling and went on to win two national collegiate championships while studying. He has now set his sights on qualifying for the LA Olympics in 2028.
Before then, Mateo must compete in multiple UCI events to qualify for this year’s South American Championships, before targeting the Pan-American Championships in 2027 in the hope of securing a place at the 2028 Olympic Games.

With limited track cycling facilities in Argentina, Mateo regularly travels internationally to train and race. He is currently competing in events across Europe, including Prague, Dublin and Valencia, while using Derby Arena as his training base.

Mateo is supported by his American cycling team, Chaney Windows and Doors, but largely funds his own training and travel.

Mateo said:

Derby has the newest velodrome in the UK, and the track cycling programme is much more accessible than other velodromes. The fact the venue has a gym also means it’s a great place to train. The city itself is also more affordable to stay compared to other options and has great transport connections for when I’m travelling to compete around Europe.

Councillor Ndukwe Onuoha, Cabinet Member for Streetpride, Parks and Leisure said:
