Leisure water plans revealed

The Council is set to publish the next steps to progress Derby’s new swimming pool complex following a recent feasibility study.

In August 2018, the Council’s Cabinet opted to undertake an extensive study to look at increasing the size of the leisure water and making it more attractive to families.

The new plans include a greater offering, increasing the leisure water by over 65%, and include a play structure elevation, two flumes, an exciting wave generating ‘wow’ ball, play structure, a multi-slide and a wave rider. This provides a more exciting and thrilling experience.

The enhanced leisure water area will provide more opportunities to families, with children aged up to 15 years catered for, rather than the previously planned age of up to 11. With these great additions to an already exciting project, this is the preferred option for the Council to pursue.

Councillor Alan Grimadell, Lead Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, explains

“The proposed enhanced leisure water really is a great addition and will give Derby a facility that will remain exciting for decades to come.

The complex will ultimately change the leisure landscape of Derby for the better. I am incredibly enthusiastic about the variety of activities on-site, both in and out of the pool areas, with a gym, studios, café and soft play as well as the much-anticipated 50m pool providing a day out for visitors.

“These are excellent proposals and we look forward to delivering them.”

An extensive value engineering exercise has driven as much value as possible from the project.  This has been carried out as construction packages went out to market and were returned over £4 million higher than was expected by our contractor. The current indicative costs for the original scheme sit at £35.8 million.

The total indicative costs for the enhanced leisure water facility along with the timeline for its construction will be available in the cabinet report in February.
