National champions race for titles at Derby Arena this weekend

Fri 25 Oct 2019

Commonwealth and National Track Champions will compete at Derby Arena this weekend for two national track cycling titles.

Medal-winning cyclists are in with a chance of claiming the National Madison title on Saturday 26 October and the National Omnium title on Sunday 27 October.

Athletes competing include Harry Tanfield, who in 2018, came first in the team pursuit in the National Track Championships and Rhys Britton who was part of the 2019 Welsh Commonwealth Men’s Road Race team and came first in the 2019 National Track Championship Points Race. Ethan Hayter, Fred Wright and Joe Holt are all amongst the top-tipped names to look out for.

The Women’s Omnium event sees National Track Championships gold medallist, Anna Docherty competing. Jenny Holl, who became Scotland's youngest national champion, at the British Track Cycling Championships in 2018 will also be taking to Derby’s track.

Derby Arena is set for an exhilarating battle to see who will be crowned the nation’s best. The weekend event promises to be an exciting day of racing showcasing the best regional and national riders.

Both competitions are held under British Cycling and UCI rules. The Madison is fast-paced with teams of two competing to gain sprint points, whilst one rider is racing the other stays on the track and is propelled back into the race through a ‘hand-sling’. Together they complete 200 laps, so it’s a real test of endurance. The Omnium consists of four events with separate competitions for male and female riders. The winner of the Omnium will be the rider with the highest total of points, following the thrilling Scratch, Tempo, Elimination and the Points race final.

Derby Arena is hosting the National Madison and Omnium Championships this weekend with doors opening from 11.00am on Saturday and 10am on Sunday.

Tickets for the are on sale at the Sales and Information Centre on 01332 255800 or online here for the National Madison and here for the National Omnium. They are also available to buy on the door at Derby Arena.
