Funding identified for New Swimming Pool Complex with enhanced leisure water

Derby City Council has identified funding to deliver the New Swimming Pool Complex with a two thirds increase in the size of the leisure water.

In January, the Council shared its vision for the enhanced leisure water scheme. Designed with families in mind, the new plans include a number of thrills and spills that will serve the city for decades to come.

The new scheme includes a beach-style leisure pool, play structure elevation, wave-generating ‘wow’ ball, two flumes, multi slide and wave rider. The additional rides will complement the 50m pool and learner pool, offering a range of choices for all ages and swimming abilities.

To deliver the enhanced scheme, the timeline has developed to reflect the additional work required. It is anticipated that the project will be completed in late 2021, with planning consent obtained this summer and construction beginning later this year.

The capital budget for the project will be increased by £9million from £33 million to £42million.  The original scheme as previously stated is £35.8 million and the extra £6.2million is attributed to delivering the enhanced leisure water. The capital budget is funded through prudential borrowing.

Approval to progress the next steps of the new swimming pool complex is to be considered by the Council’s Cabinet on Wednesday 13 February. At this meeting, commercially sensitive information around the business case will be kept confidential in order to ensure the Council can secure the best deal for the City.

Councillor Alan Grimadell, Cabinet Member of Leisure, Culture and Tourism: explains,

“The investment in the New Swimming Pool Complex will not only provide additional features but also increase the age range and capacity. The plans have been developed to give families more opportunities in the City to have fun and enjoy leisure activities.

“Since revealing the initial designs for the enhanced leisure water in January, we have received some very positive feedback, which makes us even more determined to deliver the project.”
