Queensferry Gardens Unveils Upgraded Play Area for Shelton Lock Community
Tue 21 Apr 2026
A newly refurbished play area at Queensferry Gardens in Shelton Lock has officially reopened, marking the completion of a major investment in local outdoor facilities by Derby City Council.
Delivered through the council’s Capital Rolling Programme, the project has transformed the space into a vibrant, modern play area designed to better meet the needs of local families. The upgraded site now offers a much wider range of play equipment, creating more opportunities for children of different ages to play, explore and stay active.
A key focus of the redesign has been accessibility and inclusion. The new layout and equipment have been carefully chosen to ensure children of all abilities can use and enjoy the space, making it a welcoming environment for the whole community. The design was shaped by public consultation, with local residents helping to influence the final look and feel of the play area.
As well as the new play features, a number of improvements have been made to enhance the surrounding environment. These include upgraded seating for parents and carers, static goal posts to encourage informal sports and games, and additional bins to help keep the area clean and tidy.
The play area was officially opened by the Mayor of Derby at a special event attended by local councillors and pupils from Shelton Junior School. Members of the school council were invited to take part, having followed the project’s progress with keen interest.
Headteacher Mr Bacon said pupils had been “very excited about the new play area” and were thrilled to be involved in the celebration, adding that the improved facilities would be a fantastic asset for both the school and the wider community.
The reopening of Queensferry Gardens play area represents another step in Derby City Council’s ongoing commitment to investing in high-quality green spaces and play provision across the city. The site is now open and ready to be enjoyed by residents throughout Shelton Lock and beyond.
