Spend an evening under the stars at Alvaston Park

Tue 14 Jan 2025
Get ready for a night of stargazing wonder and cosmic fun as Alvaston Park's annual ‘Star Party’ returns.
The 15th annual Stargazing event on Sat 25 Jan promises an enchanting way to make the most of the winter skies during the darkest time of year.
The free evening of family-friendly activities welcomes both seasoned stargazers and newcomers to delve into the marvels of the night sky with telescopes provided by the Derby and District Astronomical Society. There will also be a captivating star walk led by Beyond the Pencil, known for their fusion of science, arts, and creativity.
Visitors can also listen to starry stories, create some astronomy-themed crafts, watch the illuminated model Alvaston Pirate Boats on the lake and much more. The Waterside Café will also be open to keep everyone fuelled throughout the evening, offering tasty hot food and a variety of drinks.
Katie Smith, from Alvaston Park Friends, said: “It’s great to be getting back out under the stars this January for the 15th year of stargazing at Alvaston Park. There are lots of wonders to explore in the night sky, so wrap up warm and come along to join the fun!”
Councillor Ndukwe Onuoha, Derby City Council Cabinet member for Streetpride, Public Safety and Leisure, said: “This is a fantastic event that continues to bring the community together to experience the magic of astronomy in a fun and accessible way.”
The event is a partnership between Derby City Council's Parks Team and Alvaston Park Friends. It will run from 4:30pm until 8:30pm with a mixture of indoor and outdoor activities, so visitors are advised to wrap up warm, wear appropriate footwear for the outdoors and bring a torch.
