Spondon Library reopens following refurbishment

Spondon Library has reopened its doors to the public following a refurbishment. The library has been completely transformed into a modern, comfortable, and energy-efficient hub for the community.

The transformation was officially marked with a special ceremony led by Councillor Sarah Chambers, Derby City Council’s Cabinet Member for Cost of Living, Equalities and Communities, on Tue 12 Aug.

The upgrade at Spondon Library features several key improvements designed to enhance visitors’ experience. The library now features brand-new aluminium windows and doors that allow in more natural light, which is complemented by improved internal lighting.

The refreshed space includes new carpet and vinyl flooring, new shelving and furniture, and updated ceiling finishes, for a clean, modern feel. For year-round comfort, a new insulated, thermally-efficient felt roofing system and new ceiling panel heaters have been installed. The refurbishment also includes a significant upgrade to the existing fire system and the installation of new fire doors, maintaining a safe environment for everyone.

The city’s non-statutory community libraries transferred to the Council in Apr 2023. In Jul, Cabinet approved plans to maintain this management structure.

Councillor Chambers said:

The refurbishment is testimony to our commitment to Derby's libraries and our goal to ensure their continued stability and success. These works have given this valued community hub a new lease of life.

Thank you to the community for your patience while work was completed. We're excited to welcome everyone back to enjoy the improvements we’ve made.

Spondon Library will welcome back its regular Rhymetime sessions for babies and toddlers every Tue from 10:30am until 11am. Key Digital Skills Sessions for adults are available every Tue from 1pm until 3:30pm.

The library is such an important part of any community, opening up knowledge and education to all. As we get older, many of us experience loneliness. A trip to the library, seeing friendly faces and choosing a new book to read is so beneficial to well-being.

It also provides a warm, safe place to study and use a computer. I know that Spondon residents of all ages will benefit from our lovely new library.

Spondon Library’s opening hours are:

  • Mon: 10am-4:30pm
  • Tue: 10am-4:30pm
  • Wed: Closed
  • Thu: 10am-4:30pm
  • Fri: Closed
  • Sat: 10am-1pm

Spondon Library’s new telephone number is 01332 640065.
