We're proud to offer accessible Christmas shows!
Thu 29 Nov 2018
We are pleased to offer a range of relaxed, British Sign Language (BSL) interpreted, BSL shadow interpreted, captioned and audio described performances across our two biggest shows this Christmas, the giant-sized family pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk at Derby Arena and The Dinosaur Who Came for Christmas at the Guildhall Theatre.
Christmas pantomimes and theatre productions are something that many look forward to during the festive season and we believe that it is important to help make its programme accessible to a wide audience. This season we are offering a range of access performances of Jack and the Beanstalk and The Dinosaur Who Came for Christmas aimed at catering for various needs.
A trip to Jack and the Beanstalk is sure to get families into the Christmas spirit. Stepping into Derby Arena, transformed into a magical theatre space, is sure to thrill audiences of all ages. Families will enter the little village of Dappy Darley on the Derwent, home to our hero Jack, played by Blue singer, West end performer and Hollyoaks actor Duncan James.
After last year’s spectacular production Beauty and the Beast won Best Staging and Set at the Great British Pantomime Awards, Derby LIVE and Little Wolf Entertainment return for 2018 with a new giant-sized production. Featuring marvellous moosic, cow-ntless costumes and an udderly ridiculous dame, this brand new production promises to be our most spectacular panto yet.
During one lonely Christmas holiday, a young boy called PJ is amazed to discover a very strange and unusually large egg in a cave behind a rubbish dump. He takes it home and to his great surprise, out hatches a baby dinosaur! Babbling Vagabonds will be returning to the Guildhall Theatre this Christmas, from Friday 7 – Sunday 30 December to tell the story of The Dinosaur Who Came for Christmas.
Babbling Vagabonds conjure a roarsome Christmas story of mammoth proportions, combining their customary mix of colourful characters, catchy tunes, cheeky puppets, and theatrical magic to make a festive treat for all the family.
Relaxed performances offer an enjoyable environment for all, including children, young people and adults with disabilities. The productions are adapted in various ways such as altered sound and lighting effects to make the show more accessible. During the performance there will never be a full black out in the auditorium. There is also a quiet area outside the auditorium which can be used if audience members want to leave the auditorium at any point, where they can relax before they are ready to return to the show. During a relaxed performance everyone is encouraged to enjoy the show and express their appreciation and there is a relaxed attitude to noise and movement.
Relaxed performances of Jack and the Beanstalk will take place on Wed 19 Dec at 1:30pm and Thu 27 Dec at 6:30pm
The relaxed performance of The Dinosaur Who Came for Christmas will take place on Sun 16 Dec at 2:30pm
Ideal for blind and partially-sighted people, audio description is a form of audio-visual translation, using the natural pauses in dialogue or between critical sound elements to insert narrative that translates the visual image into a sense form.
Free touch tours take place 75 minutes before the performance, with the chance to get up close to the set and costumes and often with a chance to meet some of the actors. Customers should let the Derby LIVE Box Office know if they wish to attend the touch tour. Tickets are free, but should be booked in advance.
Audio described performances of Jack and the Beanstalk will take place on Wed 12 Dec at 10am, Fri 14 Dec at 7pm, Sat 22 Dec at 1:30pm and Sun 30 Dec at 1pm
Audio described performances of The Dinosaur Who Came for Christmas will take place on Sun 23 Dec at 2:30pm and Fri 28 Dec at 11am
British Sign Language (BSL) interpreted performances feature a signer at the side of the stage who signs the dialogue from the performance. It is suggested that customers let the Derby LIVE Box Office know when booking where they would like to sit: directly in front of the interpreter or on the opposite side, looking across the stage.
BSL interpreted performances of Jack and the Beanstalk will take place on Thu 13 Dec at 10am, Sat 22 Dec at 6:30pm and Sat 5 Jan at 1:30pm.
Shadow interpreted performances are an alternative approach to sign language in the theatre, in which interpreters stay on the stage rather than off to the side. By incorporating interpreters into the performance itself, theatres aim to provide a more seamless experience for the entire audience.
Shadow interpreted performances of The Dinosaur Who Came for Christmas will take place on Sun 9 Dec at 2:30pm, Wed 12 Dec at 10:30am, Thu 20 Dec at 4:30pm and Sat 29 Dec at 11am.
During captioned performances words appear on screens either side of the stage at the same time as they are spoken - ideal for those who are deaf, hard of hearing or if you'd just like to read along.
Captioned performances of Jack and the Beanstalk will take place on Sun 30 Dec at 1pm and 5pm.
