Derek Gascoyne tells us what he and Don love about Derby Arena

We are very fortunate that Derby City Council invested in the striking icon Derby Velodrome and Multi-sport Arena, without such a wonderful facility neither myself at 86 years or Don at 84 would be able to enjoy our love of cycling in complete safety. With thanks to Phil the track manger and his staff we are able to ride on the track at least twice a week on sessions especially designed to complement our ability, so much so that there is now an increase in riders wanting to take advantage of the sessions. This is also very much a social occasion when the riders enjoy the after race refreshments at Café 42.

Coupled with the track is the super gym with all the top class equipment and staffed by some very knowledgeable instructors who can and will devise a programme of exercise suitable specifically for cyclists. On floor 2 is the Wattbike Studio where training sessions take place, there are also meeting rooms catering for many of the field sports that take place on the main arena. Without doubt Derby Arena is a wonderful sports HUB that serves the East Midlands, being so accessible to both road and rail transport and full praise must be given to the members of Derby City Council to go ahead with its building and operation.
