Derby Arena rider Katie Toft qualifies for World Paracycling track championships
Wed 21 Mar 2018
Katie Toft has been selected to ride the 500m, 3km IP and the Scratch race as part of Team GB at the UCI Paracycling Track World Championships in Rio. Derby Arena rider Katie will be making her debut at the world championships for the Great Britain Cycling Team, following recent success from fellow Derby Arena riders.
Katie is a C3 para-track cyclist, whose main discipline is the 3km individual time trial. This selection follows on from Katie’s huge medal success earlier this year at the National Track Championships, where she won two bronze and one silver medal. Katie gained her silver in the 500m standing-start event and bronze in both the 200m flying start and the 3000m standing-start. Katie missed out on gold in the 3000m by just 35-hundredths of a second, being beaten only by world champions. Katie currently trains at Derby Arena, working with the Arena’s coaching team.
“Being able to train at Derby has been invaluable, without the support I’d have had no track time and consequently wouldn’t have got to this point. Training at Derby is great, I love the atmosphere and I’ve met some great people. When I first started training at Derby Arena I used to hope for the best, now I’m pushing to the limit, getting faster and more confident all the time. Without the support of a number of coaches I would not have this opportunity.”
Katie’s success follows on from a series of successes from other Derby Arena riders this year. Earlier this month five Derby Arena riders were selected to compete at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth games. Derby Arena riders also had great success at the 2018 UCI Track Cycling World Championships with Team KGF rider Charlie Tanfield winning gold in the men’s team pursuit race earlier this month. Team KGF also achieved great success back in February when they won team pursuit gold at the Tissot UCI Track Cycling World Cup.
Councillor Amo Raju, Cabinet member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism said:
“I’m delighted that Derby Arena rider Katie Toft will be part of Team GB at the World Championships. It’s great that the training, support and encouragement from the Derby Arena coaches has had such a positive impact. It’s clear from the recent successes we’ve had that Derby Arena is delivering a strong field of world class riders. This is all part of making Derby an even greater place to live, work and visit. I wish Katie all the best and I hope that her success will inspire many others to be ambitious and experience the outstanding facilities available at Derby Arena.”
Derby Arena is proud to provide facilities accessible to all, making the Arena a venue for people of all abilities. The Arena is fully accessible with lifts and ramps through the building, disabled parking available outside the venue and induction loops throughout the building. People of all abilities are encouraged to use the Arena on an equal basis, and coaches encourage all riders to be ambitious and seek the same success as riders such as Katie.
The UCI Paracycling Track World Championships will take place between Thursday 22 March and Sunday 25 March.
