Introducing Disc Golf - Markeaton Park’s Newest Attraction

Wed 10 Jul 2019

Markeaton Park is set to welcome yet another attraction to its ever-growing mix of family sports and activities. Disc Golf will open to the public on Saturday 20 July with ‘pros’ on-hand to show you how it’s done.

Disc Golf will be located at the sports pavilion, which is already home to a range of sports including tennis, cricket and ball sports. With Markeaton Park already hosting a great mix of golfing activities including pitch and putt, FootGolf and the recently refurbished mini golf course, Disc Golf will be right at home.

The aim of Disc Golf is to throw the Frisbee or ‘disc’ towards the elevated hole, known as a basket. Just like the traditional form for Golf, the aim is to make the fewest shots, taking the next from where the disc has landed.

There are nine baskets on the course, which was designed by Richard Hatton of Disc Golf UK. Richard has also developed the course to be fully wheelchair accessible.

To get more people playing confidently, Disc Golf UK have introduced QR codes on both the scorecards and tee-signs so players can quickly scan them with their smartphone and view a video with the rules and tips on how to play.

Councillor Robin Wood, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism explains

“I’m delighted we have been able to work alongside Disc Golf UK to design this challenging course, which is the first of its kind in Derbyshire. We’re told children as young as 6 and adults as old as 95 are known to play regularly; so it’s great to have another activity that’s suitable for all ages.

“Markeaton Park is Derby’s most visited park and we look forward to Disc Golf becoming hugely popular amongst the people of Derby.”

The course will be officially opened to the public on Saturday 20 July at 11:00am, those wanting to be the first to play the course should head to the sports pavilion at Markeaton Park where they can hire their discs and scorecards. There will be a Disc Golf ‘pro’ on the course to show people how to play.
