Laura Kenny CBE crowned national champion at Derby Arena
Mon 19 Feb 2018
An exciting day of racing at Derby Arena for the National Men's & Women's Omnium Championships 2018 on Sat 17 Feb culminated with Laura Kenny CBE taking the national title on her return to track cycling just months after giving birth to her first son. In the race for the men’s title local rider and world cup gold medallist Harry Tanfield narrowly missed out on the gold to Matthew Walls by a bike length.
It was a day of action packed riding at Derby Arena, in the Men’s championship pre-race discussion focused on rising track cycling stars from team KGF and if they could beat Team GB’s senior team for the title. In the women’s the talk was all about Britain’s most successful female Olympian Laura Kenny CBE and if she could claim the national title on her return to tack cycling.
There was a stacked field of riders in all categories British Cycling put forward riders from its senior teams Breeze and 100% me. It was 100% me riders Matt Walls and Joe Holt who took gold and bronze respectively with local KGF rider Harry Tanfield having to settle for the silver medal. Laura Kenny won dominating fashion with Liv Cycling Club rider Jessica Roberts taking silver and Storey Racing rider Neah Evans taking Bronze.
