Time capsules discovered at Derby’s Market Hall
Until Sat 13 Jan 2024

About the Event
A special exhibition to view recently discovered Time Capsules!
Contractors working on the transformation of Derby’s historic Market Hall recently uncovered two sealed glass containers, hidden in the walls of the building. A special exhibition at Derby Local Studies and Family History Library now gives you a unique chance to see the contents of these historic time capsules up close before they are resealed and replaced.
The first capsule dates from 1864, when Mayor Thomas Roe laid the foundation stone. The second is from 1938, when the interior of the building was completely refurbished. The capsules have been opened to reveal historic items marking the events, including newspapers and coins from the day, giving us a fascinating insight into Derby’s past.
View these treasures from a bygone era, accompanied by historic photographs and documents selected from the library collection to help you discover the history of this landmark building. You can also contribute ideas for what should be placed in new capsule, to be reburied alongside the originals. The exhibition is free and runs until 16 January 2024.
