Retired lawyer Simon Hobbs’ novel is based on a notorious murder committed locally in the 1860s. At this story’s heart is the Wigwell Grange murder of Bessie Goodwin in 1863, its prelude, subsequent trial and the national scandal that followed.

The story confronts both the tragedy of the crime and the arbitrary justice system of the Victorian era.
