On 1st July 1916, 160,000 men climbed out of their trenches on the Somme for the opening of the greatest battle of the First World War. At the extreme left wing of the British attack, near the heavily fortified village of Gommecourt, the 1/5 battalion of the Sherwood Foresters (the "Robin Hoods") were launched into some of the heaviest fighting of the day. This talk will examine the experience of the men involved in their own words taken from memoirs, journals and letters and with the assistance of maps of the battlefield.

Brian Stone is a retired solicitor who has lived in Derbyshire since 1970. He has taught many courses for the WEA and Nottingham University in his spare time since 1984 and now gives talks on various local history topics. He is well-known in the East Midlands, and Derbyshire in particular, for his lecturing activities. He is also the author of three books - Derbyshire in the Civil War, Millennium Eyewitness and Bonnie Prince Charlie & the Highland Army in Derby.
