Derby’s non-statutory community libraries extend opening hours

Derby’s network of ten non-statutory community libraries is extending its opening hours to provide greater access for local communities. Under the new schedule, Derby City Council will open all ten branches across the city every Saturday morning from 10am until 1pm.

The rollout is being introduced on a phased basis with four libraries – Spondon, Blagreaves, Allestree, and Allenton – having already launched their new Saturday morning sessions. Chellaston and Springwood libraries are next in line, with Chellaston opening on Saturday mornings from Sat 18 Jul, followed by Springwood on Sat 1 Aug. The others will follow.

In addition to the weekend rollout, Allenton library is extending its midweek services. The branch will now remain open until 4:30pm on Wednesdays, extending its previous 3pm closing time to support after-school and late-afternoon visitors.

These changes reflect a city-wide effort to make libraries more accessible to residents whose weekday work or school commitments prevent them from visiting during previous operating hours. The extended access also comes at a perfect time as the city celebrates the National Year of Reading, aligning with nationwide efforts to foster a lifelong love for books, literacy, and learning across all generations.

Councillor Sarah Chambers, Derby City Council Cabinet Member for Communities, Equalities and Public Safety, said:

Libraries are vital hubs for our residents, so I’m delighted to introduce Saturday morning opening at our non-statutory community libraries. We hope it will allow busy families and residents who work full-time during the week to access the library and utilise all the services available, especially as we celebrate the National Year of Reading.

Alongside the extra Wednesday afternoon hours at Allenton, these changes make our libraries more accessible to everyone. I’d like to thank the library staff and our dedicated volunteers for their hard work.

As services expand, local libraries are actively looking for volunteers to join their teams. Volunteers will join a friendly, welcoming environment supported by library staff, with full training provided. More information about volunteering opportunities can be found directly on the Derby Libraries website.

Residents are also encouraged to check the Derby Libraries website or visit their local branch for specific launch dates as the weekend service continues to roll out across the remaining libraries.

Separately, Derby City Council has announced that Mackworth Library will close at 1pm on Thu 30 Jul to allow for essential roof repairs. The library is expected to reopen later in the year.
