Free college courses for adults now available at Sinfin Library

Sinfin Library is opening a new chapter by partnering with Derby College Group to create a dedicated adult learning hub. There is a diverse range of free courses available, designed to empower local residents to reach their full potential.

From mastering digital skills and improving English and maths to exploring careers working with children or learning ESOL (English as a Second Language), the curriculum focuses on building confidence and creating opportunities. Hosting these sessions in the familiar and welcoming environment of the library, aims to ensure the learning feels accessible, relevant, and achievable for everyone.

The courses at Sinfin Library are guided by friendly and experienced tutors who provide support every step of the way, and offer flexible options to suit busy schedules.

Councillor Sarah Chambers, Derby City Council Cabinet Member for Communities, Equalities and Public Safety, said:

We’re thrilled to be teaming up with Derby College Group to create this adult learning hub at Sinfin Library. Libraries have always been the heart of our communities, and is a perfect example of how we can provide life-changing resources right where people need them.

By offering these free courses in such a supportive and familiar setting, we are helping residents gain the vital skills and confidence they need to unlock new career paths and personal opportunities.

Jennifer Rehman, Assistant Principal – Community Education at Derby College Group, said:

Education changes lives, and we believe everyone deserves the chance to learn and grow. By bringing these courses into Sinfin Library, we’re making it easier for local adults to access free, high-quality learning opportunities that can lead to brighter futures.

The library is hosting an open day on Sat 24 Jan from 10:30am until 2:30pm. This is a fantastic opportunity for residents to meet the tutors, explore the range of courses, and ask questions in a relaxed setting.

The event will be a fun day for the whole family, featuring free refreshments and taster sessions in everything from British Sign Language (BSL) to crochet. While adults explore their learning options, children can stay entertained with dedicated arts, crafts, and bracelet-making activities. More details of the open day are available on the Derby College website.
