Next phase of Derby Libraries Dungeons and Dragons project
Thu 11 Jun 2026
The Derby Libraries Dungeons and Dragons project has moved into its next phase, officially unveiling the rich, archive-inspired world of ‘Darbye’.
Derby Local Studies and Family History Library is collaborating with a professional Game Master (GM) who and a group of young adult volunteers to delve into the archives to unleash a fantasy alternative version of historical Derby, where magic is real and anything can happen!
The result will be a unique and exciting role-playing game, blending D&D fifth edition rules with characters, locations and storylines drawn from Derby's rich history, mythology and folklore.
After six months of intense research, the deep dive into the local archives is complete and the game world, campaign story arc, and player characters have been crafted using historical records. In a brilliant twist for both history buffs and gamers, many of the actual historical documents discovered during the research will feature in the game.
To bring Darbye to life, volunteers recently participated in a series of acting skills workshops led by the project’s Storyteller, to sharpening their role-playing skills. The team also sourced stunning 18th-century miniatures from Wargames Foundry, painting them during a relaxing Sunday workshop to get them ready for immediate tabletop action.
One half of the volunteer team is currently conducting a full play-test of the campaign at the library. The other half are starring in a live-play video podcast filmed in a backroom setting at Mr Grundy’s Tavern, featuring props and backgrounds designed by a filmmaking crew from the University of Derby. This serialised show will land on YouTube later this year, serving as a great resource for budding GMs and a fun way for audiences to experience the full campaign.
Volunteer KT said: “The world of 18th century Darbye is fantastical and has been so interesting to learn about! Our wonderful GM is doing a really great job of bringing it to life. If only the dice weren't such a cruel mistress!”
Looking ahead, the project is expanding to include family-friendly D&D events in local libraries this autumn. The Derby Libraries Dungeons and Dragons Project is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Councillor Sarah Chambers, Derby City Council Cabinet Member for Communities, Equalities and Public Safety, said: “It’s so exciting to see the Dungeons and Dragons project enter this next phase – it’s a truly innovative way to bring our local history to life. We have such a rich archive at the Derby Local Studies and Family History Library, and this project is proving that heritage can be an active, engaging, and collaborative experience.
“We’re very grateful for the support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, and I’m looking forward to following Darbye’s developments over the coming months.”
