Work to begin on Normanton’s New Library
Fri 21 Jun 2019
Derby City Council is set to commence building work on St Augustine’s Community Centre to create Normanton Library.
In addition to the library, the community centre will be refurbished and facilities upgraded, with all services brought together to create a multi-use community hub. The first floor of the building, which has lift access, boasts a community room and floor area, which is perfect for a range of community groups, classes and private events. Amongst its services, the library will offer books, computers and a children’s area.
Changes have been made to further enhance the specification from those in the original feasibility study. These changes improve the building’s accessibility as well as incorporating fixtures and fittings which will better-serve the needs of the community. The Council has allocated additional investment from its capital programme and the budget allocated to complete the project is £831k.
Careful consideration has been given to enable the specification to meet the needs and requirements of the Community and therefore the schedule has been adjusted so that the library and community hub will now open in early autumn.
Councillor Robin Wood, Cabinet member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism said:
“We understand the closure of the Carnegie Building, which led to the suspension of the Library service, has been difficult for some residents. Our libraries team are very confident that the space at St Augustine’s will enable a very good library service to be provided in a very suitable environment.
“Ensuring we get the project right has led us to review the timeline and increasing our investment. Community Groups have told us how important the service is to them and we want to ensure the Community Hub will become a much used and enjoyed facility.
“I am looking forward to the community centre being given a new lease of life, welcoming residents, schools and groups and forming an integral part of the area.”
Derby City Council have appointed contractor GF Tomlinson Group to carry out the refurbishment works at St Augustine’s Community Centre they will begin work onsite at the beginning of July.
In April 2019, the Council requested expressions of interest in the former Pear Tree Library building to bring it back into use. This process is still underway, with a closing date for the submission of expressions set for mid-June; an update will be provided in due course.
