Derby Parks volunteers at work
Wed 19 Oct 2022
Without the dedication and support from the Derby Parks Volunteers, our parks would not be the amazing places that residents and visitors to the city can enjoy.
Every week volunteer teams come along to organised events with endless energy, commitment and friendship, supporting conservation, general maintenance and encouraging wildlife habitats to flourish. For the past few months, here is a small example of the work completed.
Spondon Village Clear up

Team RR Submarines supported a clear up of green spaces around Spondon Village Hall. Paths were cleaned, weeded and bramble removed, followed by shrubs being pruned and fly tipping collected. Altogether this team collected 12 bags of litter!
Chaddesden Wood Fence Installation

Friends of Chaddesden Wood support Derby Parks tea to create a sustainable, sturdy woven fence, utilising coppiced hazel from inside the wood. This has created a natural barrier which will protect the woodland pond from disturbance during the breeding season.
Homes for birds and bats at Sinfin Moor Park

Friends of Sinfin Moor Park and Local Nature Reserve, have been building bird & bat boxes with the support of the Neighbourhood Team & Park users. The funding for the materials was kindly donated by Sinfin Neighbourhood Board.
New homes for Owls at Darley Park

Daley Park has recently received restoration to historic walls in the park. Daniel Rees who was working on this wall project also built up a friendship with the Friends of Darley Open Spaces and their chats discussed the lack of provision for nesting owls. Daniel explained he was keen to learn new skills in carpentry and volunteered to build an Owl nest.
As seen from the picture above, an impressive owl house was constructed using plywood reclaimed from a previous Seddon site, a set of plans downloaded from RSPB web site and a little guidance from the site team. The sprig of blossom is a good luck charm borrowed from a team of Slovenian engineers and adds a flourish to Daniels hard work.
