Derby Parks Volunteers back in action!

Thu 26 Nov 2020

Derby Parks Volunteers have been back in action this Autumn! The volunteers were able to return to the parks in September and October to carry out tasks in line with the Government guidance at the time.

In just a few short weeks, they really got stuck in and have worked at seven different parks and local nature reserves. Their enthusiasm hasn't been hampered, with the volunteers working in small bubbles of no more than six to continue their great work. So far, they have cleared grassland and scrub at Sinfin Moor Park Local Nature Reserve ready for the cattle to return; at Mickleover Meadows Local Nature Reserve to help sustain the local owl population; and at Chellaston Brickworks Local Nature Reserve to encourage butterflies.

And, if that wasn’t enough, they have continued work started more than a decade ago to improve biodiversity in Big Wood at Allestree Park Local Nature Reserve and have cleared out ponds at Dale Road Park and Porter’s Lane. Finally they have returned to Derby’s only swamp at Darley and Nutwood Local Nature Reserve to maintain its unique state.

Looking ahead, our amazing Volunteers are eager to start work on the Spondon Linear Park, the old canal path, in the new year.
