Derby’s parks maintain excellence to retain Green Flag Awards

Six of Derby’s parks have once again been awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award status, recognising them as some of the best green spaces in the UK.

This international quality mark celebrates the high standards of our parks and is a true testament to the incredible hard work and dedication of the teams who tirelessly care for them, ensuring everyone in Derby can enjoy these beautiful spaces.

The parks that have retained their Green Flag Award status are:

The scheme also includes the Green Flag Community Award, which highlights excellence at sites managed by dedicated community groups and volunteers. In Derby, seven sites have received this recognition.

These are:

  • Chaddesden Wood Local Nature Reserve
  • Chellaston Brickworks Local Nature Reserve
  • Darley and Nutwood Local Nature Reserve
  • Little Chester Allotments
  • Markeaton Park Walled Garden
  • Sinfin Moor Park Local Nature Reserve

For the fifth time, Derby Arboretum has been awarded Green Heritage Site Accreditation, supported by Historic England, for the management of its historic features.

Councillor Ndukwe Onuoha, Derby City Council’s Cabinet Member for Streetpride, Public Safety and Leisure, said:

These Green Flag Awards are a truly well-deserved recognition of the vital role our open spaces play in the health and wellbeing of Derby's residents.

We're incredibly fortunate to have so many beautiful parks and green areas that everyone can enjoy throughout the year. A huge congratulations goes out to the dedicated Council teams, community groups, and volunteers whose hard work and commitment make these spaces places we can all be immensely proud of.

Green Flag Award Scheme Manager, Paul Todd MBE, said:

Congratulations to everyone involved who have worked tirelessly to ensure that Derby’s Parks achieve the high standards required for the Green Flag Award. Quality parks and green spaces make the country a heathier place to live and work in, and a stronger place in which to invest.

Crucially, Derby’s parks are a vital green space for communities to enjoy nature and, during the ongoing cost of living crisis, it’s a free and safe space for families to socialise. It also provides important opportunities for local people and visitors to reap the physical and mental health benefits of green space.

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
