Enjoy the outdoors with online courses

A path through the countryside

Tue 28 Apr 2020

We may not be able to explore the countryside as much as we normally can, but while we have to keep our walks local, Derby Adult Learning Service is running three free online courses to help us make the most of the outdoors without leaving home.

Map Reading Basics in a Virtual Environment takes place on Friday 1st May from 10am to 12pm, and will be taught by tutor Alastair Clark via Zoom. Suitable if you're new to map reading, or you want to brush up on your skills, it will help you get the most from walking when we can start getting out and about more again.

During the course you will:

  • Have a go at drawing your own map
  • Learn how to understand basic symbols on an Ordnance Survey map
  • Use your knowledge to describe a walk using this information on a map

It will be followed by two further free online courses looking more at our surroundings, and how land was mapped. Peek At The Park runs from 10am to 12pm on Friday 15th May and is an exploration of Britain's first National Park – The Peak District, taking in its culture, history and geography.

On Friday 22nd May, find out more about How Britain Was Mapped – a lighthearted look at the early days of the Ordnance Survey, and the building of Trig Points on the top of hills.  This will run from 10am to 12pm.
