What's been happening in our parks
Mon 12 Jul 2021
Find out what we have been doing in the parks over the last few weeks. We have been involved in this year's Great British Spring Clean and we have had a great display of interesting plants growing in our very own nature reserve within Derby City. Also, see one of our newest additions to Darley Park Playing Fields.
Great British Spring Clean 2021
The Derby Green Spaces Forum rallied to become involved with the national Keep Britain Tidy GBSC2021. For two weeks, Derby Parks, Streetpride, Neighbourhoods and Derby’s amazing volunteer army came out to litter pick, sweep, tidy and paint the wonderful parks, verges, nooks and crannies. From Allestree to Oakwood, Spondon to Alvaston, Sinfin to Littleover and Mickleover to Mackworth, the spring clean reached far and wide. Thanks you to all those involved!

Orchids a plenty!
We have some beautiful nature reserves within Derby City and each June we marvel at the display of interesting plants, particularly the orchids. They are noted on Allestree Park, Dale Road Park in Spondon, Sinfin Moor Park and Chellaston Brickworks but perhaps the largest spectacle is at Darley and Nutwood where there are five different species. Each year, we work hard to improve the natural habitat in each of these areas and are rewarded with a great display of biodiversity. Don’t worry if you missed their appearance this year, put a note in your diary to visit during June 2022.

Community Orchard at Darley Park Playing Fields
One of the latest additions to Derby’s parks is the community orchard on Darley Park Playing Fields. Planted over a year ago, we have recently carried out some general maintenance to ensure the surrounding vegetation doesn’t compete with the trees. It was great to note some fruit was already hanging from several of the new trees and the surrounding meadows were beginning to establish. If you pop over for a visit, save us some apples, yum!
