About the Event
This illustrated talk is a soap opera in three acts.
Act one discusses the way in which Willliam Lever helped develop the modern-day soap manufacturing industry, and Act two reflects upon his passion for gardening, in particular his impact on a large area near his original hometown of Bolton. The final act looks at the newly created settlement of Port Sunlight, built to accommodate the soap factory workers and their families. It reflected the ideas of many such developments created during the industrial revolution but also offered inspiration for the time of British new town planning which followed the end of the second world war.
