Library service set to move as Central Library closes

Central Library

Fri 8 Jun 2018

The relocation of services at Central Library is due to start this week as Derby City Council continues to develop a successful modern and sustainable service for library users.

Customers will not be able to access the Central Library building from 1pm on Saturday 9 June 2018, as library staff prepare to move thousands of books to several sites across the city.

The new Riverside Library will open Monday 2 July from 8.30am where customers can enjoy modern facilities, access to computers and a range of regular sessions, including Rhymetime and Job Clubs.

As well as providing a more central location, the move will offer a self-service system and longer opening hours.

Councillor Alan Grimadell, Cabinet Member for Leisure Culture and Tourism, said: “Central Library has played an important role in Derby for a long time and we know its service will be greatly missed.

However we look forward to welcoming people through the doors at Riverside Library where Derby Libraries will continue to offer a valuable service for the local community.

With more sessions to suit a variety of interests, including reading, writing and computers, the library will be a place for people to discover something new, as well as borrow books.”

Customers can access and reserve books at other local libraries during the closure and eBooks, eAudiobooks and eMagazines will continue to be available 24/7.

Central Library users will not have to return their items between 9 June and 2 July. Council libraries across the city will continue to operate as normal, if anyone would like to return them during this time.

Riverside Library will be located on the ground floor of the Council House and opening times will be: Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 1pm.

A series of sessions and opportunities to meet local authors will take place in the first two weeks of Riverside Library opening, to give visitors a taste of what the new library has to offer. For more information click here.
